GOT MY COPY: The Drifting Classroom 5
The scheduled release date according to Viz site is tomorrow, 4/17/07. But it looks like the Kinokuniya in SF got their shipment early! I picked up and read the fifth volume Saturday afternoon (like a real nerd proper: over hot dogs, fries and Dr. Pepper).
This isn't the first time Kinokuniya has hooked me up ahead of schedule with Viz titles; They've regularly had new volumes of Phoenix, Death Note and Nana available 1-2 before their official release dates. Maybe they get the special hookup because Viz's headquarters is only like 2 miles from them?
PS: As you might have noticed, the scanlations are still down. We're working with out host to get things back up and running ASAP!

AWESOME~. The more Drifting Classroom to read, the better :D. I just hope it doesnt take my library very long to get volume 5 (it a long time for them to get volume 4 :(). Anyways, how was volume 5? (im sure i already know the answer to this question though lol)
So how was it? How was it?
So--- it's pretty radical. I dont like getting reviews or spoilers too much, but the bad gets worse worse worse, and more kids die. (sounds about right?)
The main weird thing for me is that I don't know how the series ends, and I am baffled as to how it could possibly wrap up in only one more volume. I can think of two endings that might work:
1) deus-ex-machina time portal weird flop and they get home safely
2) eke out their days with what they got, and all die horrible starvation deaths.
My buddy Jason edited this book, but i still don't know what to look for in an ending-- can't wait!

Sooo... how many volumes of The Drifting Classroom have you read so far? because you just got volume 5 from viz and you say that theres only one more volume left.... but to my knowledge theres 11 volumes in all (got me abit confused here). Could it be that theres more then one story in the series and that volume 6 will wrap up the current stoy? or something like that.
hey arngrim:
Hmmm. I might be confused here too-- I was saying 6 volumes based on the viz site listing 6 (so far) and that the original japanese manga is published in 6 books. Where did you hear the 11 book figure? If the US versions and Japan versions dont match up 1:1, then perhaps that is the case.
Here you gohttp://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=6087 . I also went and checked wiki aswell, and it also said that its 11 volumes long. So far i have read 3 volume and have volume 4 on my shelf waiting to be read, and im rather intrested in seeing how this story lasts though 11 volumes. I really hope that Viz or any other good manga licensing compainy start working on more Umezz manga (I REALLY would love to read Left Hand of God, Right Hand of the Devil).
Interesting, interesting. Yeah, it looks like that edition is split across 11 volumes, while a different one I've seen was 6 books from shogakukan. 11 volumes would be nice :)
It's been expensive to keep up with all my favorite series (like 2-4 books a week), but such an awesome time for manga fans.
I just emailed the editor of drifting classroom to get to the bottom of this mystery. Will let you know if its 6 or 11 :)
thanks, Ryan!
Hey dude, I heard back from Jason (the editor) of this already:
+ Will be 11 volumes total, following the older tankobon release style you mentioned.
+ The releases will also include Vol. 11's tankobon bonus
story, "Negai", one of the stories adapted into the recent Kazuo Umezu
Horror Theater short films.
GOOD NEWS ALL AROUND!

Just picked up vol. 1 of this today. I had heard of it on here, and the premise sounds amazing, so when I saw that the 5th one was on the new comics shelf at my local shop, i just had to pick it up. Haven't read it yet though, i'll let you know what I think.
Thanks for the heads up about the kiiiiiii show, sorry it took me so long to respond. I didn't get to stick around and see them though.
P.S. - I too think we would get along very well if we ever met in the real world.
