SCANLATION NATION

Check out this interesting read from the latest issue of The Comics Journal. It's all about amateur/unofficial manga translators and the geeky role they(we?) play. I continue to assume that since we are working with Sensha, Maruo, Hino, Kago and Ito that we don't fall into the Kenshin crowd, but who knows, really?

One of the very few articles on this scene, I found it really fascinating:

Scanlation Nation: Amateur Manga Translators Tell Their Stories

"For the readers of prestigious comics magazines like The Comic Journal, who consider themselves to be connoisseurs of comic art and find little to be excited about in the current English manga market: Keep in mind that what is currently available is much like the American superhero-comic scene. There are certainly worthwhile examples of the genres that are prevalent in English today if you know where to look, but the full breadth of what is out there in Japanese is immense, and it may take some time for truly advanced examples to see the light here."

check out also this editorial on Shojo Manga and the role it plays (that mainstream american comics can't fulfill). thanks to Anthony for passing it along.

Webby Crunch

Evan here. After almost two weeks, my broadband is back up, and I just posted the comic that I raced to finish before Comic Con...

Click above or here to read it.

It's my first comic in 5 years. The story is a bit quick & bare, but it was basically an excercise to get me back into comic mode, so bear with me. Hope you like it.

PS: I know it has a weird title, but it makes sense once you read the comic.

on the horizon

An update on our happenings:

  • ##Evan without access: He's currently in the process of moving, and Evan has been without wireless for about a week. This means not only has he been unable to post, we've been unable to shoot files back and forth for a bit now. He wants me to tell everyone that Comcast should be coming on Monday to get him all hooked up, and we'll have some new goodness soon after

  • ##Anthony's story up on Asimovs now! Our friend Anthony won the Asimov undergraduate award in 2004, and his story is now available on their site. A totally excellent piece of work that'll be right up most of our reader's alleys/asses. Please check out "Orbiting" now!

  • ##Comic-Con!!! A bummer, but my lady and I can't make it down to San Diego this weekend. BUT-- Evan is making the trip as I type this up. I'm expecting lots of photos and stories when he gets back. ALSO, he'll be handing out two items at the con:
    1)
our SAME HAT! preview zine that we first prepared for APE
    and
    2)
a TOTALLY ORIGINAL, 10-page horror comic!!
That's right!! We'll be posting this original comic after he gets back, free on this site. Look forward to Evan talking about this once he gets back. EXCITING, no?

Following Evan's comic, we will be running more new strips, Maruo and some original comics by Derek, and a new horror/Shocksupsense collaboration between Me&my lady and evan! Lot's of fun stuff, coming very very soon on this page!

oh, and if you wondered what i'll be doing this weekend:

I like monsters too (new Yoshida Sensha day!)

three orders of business:

  • 1. Derek's birthday! Wanted to give a shoutout (as they say) to our non-occidental spirtual advisor and brotha-from-anotha-mother, dyu. Bummed that we couldnt be there for the festivities (and, i'm guessing, a red on black on white on blue on green on black MANA BURN-A-THON), but hope you lived it up with otr and the rest of the gang. now where's the horror comic you promised for my birthday?
check his site out here: derekyu.com

  • 2. Hellen comics! We sortof swindled hellen accidently- we gave her a copy of our APE samehat pamphlet (16 pages, old strips, b&w) and got an AWESOME copy of KOMISCHES BUCH #3 (with supplemental mix cd to listen along with!). Very radical stuff. Check it out at her comics page. THANK YOU HELLEN! we promise to have something cooler to trade you with next time!

  • 3. NEW COMIC DAY!. Urination is the #3rd funniest human experience, and this strip has it in spades! pleeese enjoy.

as usual, please read from right-to-left.
