Taiyo Matsumoto's BLACK & WHITE... anime?

Exciting news for fans of Taiyo Matsumoto (also of Blue Spring and No.5 fame)-- an anime of Black & White is coming out at the end of this year, put together by STUDIO4℃. The Japanese title is "Tekkon Kinkurito". Check out the official site for more information/stills/news. He's not in the horror or gag vein that we've been posting about here, but we are HUGE fans of Matsumoto's art and stories.

Check out the trailer:

It seems like they're doing a really great job with the character design (though White looks more faithful than how I picture Black). Hope they can maintain Matsumoto's style and atmosphere with CG... looks really promising!

WHERE IS OCTOPUS GIRL Vol.2?

man...what the hell?

Guess what supposedly came out yesterday?
and guess what NONE of the comic shops near me had in stock??

OCTOPUS GIRL 2!! I've been dying to read this since a few months ago, when Evan lent me the first book. It's an insane, satirical, beautiful take on horror AND gag manga that manages to pull off hilarious panels AND truly freaky/scary shit--- often right in succesion! This is definitely one of the best manga releases of 2006. (Thank you Dark Horse and new awesome editor supreme Robert Simpson!) You have noticed that Dark Horse is putting out the majority of the cool, new horror manga this summer, right? Has anyone else read Octopus Girl? What did you think??

Click here to check out (and read a short preview of) Octopus Girl Vol.1

PS: I do believe a certain ex-Viz editor, comic writer/illustrator has my copy of Octopus Girl Vol. 1 in his possession, aHEM :)

EDIT: Still no sign of Octopus Girl 2... But here is a pic from the upcoming Octopus Girl 3 this fall!

Horror Make-up!

We'll be posting Junji Ito's Falling PART 2 this week!

Thanks for the great response so far! We're just putting the final touches on the last few pages, and will post it in the next few days. Keep the comments coming, and let us know what you think! In the meantime, here are three quick things to mention:

  • + How-to do Horror Make-Up! We found this link on Daily Portal Z via the awesome Mari Diary and wanted to share it. There's a complete tutorial on applying Horror Manga make-up, and then her adventures out on the town .

The inspiration for the make-up (SO Kazuo Umezu!)

    The make-up (in-progress)

    Voila! Everything is SCARIER now!

Check out the links above for more pics!

  • + We want to give a big plug/thanks to Japundit for featuring us in their weekly podcast (We get namedropped in episode 26). We are big fans of their blog, which provides daily news/links on an always amusing flow of crazy happenings in Japan. If you haven't already, I'd recommend adding them to your daily blog roll!

  • + A quick reminder - LiveJournal syndication available! If you'd like to get notifications of new posts via LJ, you can click this link to add our syndication to your friends' page. We can also be taken in via RSS feed, with this link. Enjoy!

FALLING by JUNJI ITO (PART 1 of 2)

This thing has been a LONG time in the works. We went over and over the translation, editing, touch-up and lettering, and I hope it shows. (Evan did an AWESOME job on getting the fonts, formatting and touch-up just right).

We are very proud to finally get some Junji Ito representation on Same Hat. If you weren't aware, Ito is one of our absolute favorite horror manga writer/artists, and we want to add to the growing stack of his comics available in English!

Please pass this link on to your cool friends, and leave feedback in the comments!! (Also, a special THANKS to Nate for helping with some of the gnarly translation points, and Alice for editing and transcribing my illegible, handwritten notes!)

PLEASE ENJOY!! (part 1 of 2)
