"SARU" by Kazuichi Hanawa

Many thanks to Ben for scanning and sending us this awesome story. He described it as a "ten page epic story about Heian-era monkey brain connoisseurs by Kazuichi Hanawa that was published in an architectural journal some time ago."

as usual, please read from right-to-left.

zomg, I was actually thinking about resorting to buying that architectural journal just for the hanazawa story, thanks for saving me the trouble!

(it looks like photobucket shrunk some of the scans down? I'd recommend and for when photobucket's irritating size limit is a problem)

hmmmm, I have no idea how my brain morphed "kazuichi hanawa" into "hanazawa" there...

so why did they publish this in an architectural journal? which one was it? do architects eat brains to build better models?

no helen, architects brains are eaten by clients.

oh lord. I actually can't remember the name of the journal -- I just sortof took it with a grain of salt: 'oh yeah, architectural journal with semi-homoerotic, monkey-brain eating comic. makes sense to me...'

maybe ben can post about the specifics of where this story was published!

Does anyone have any idea how or where to buy original art by Hanazawa?

That has to be one of the most messed up stories I've ever read. Right up there with Uziga at his worst but quite a bit more artistic. Jeez. I love it.

Could someone reupload the scans of Saru? Photobucket says the account has been inactive.

@Steven: ah bummer! I actually don't have the scans for this story anywhere myself. Maybe post a comment on the next Same Hat post and see if someone can hook you up??
