THE LAST GOOD HORROR MOVIE YOU SAW?

Just recently re-watched the original ALIEN in all its glory. Have UGESTSU & TOKYO FIST sitting in their Green Cine sleeves waiting to be (re)watched. And then saw the disappointing HARD CANDY yesterday. SO, THE QUESTION IS...

What is the last good horror movie you saw? Post it in the comments and I'll check it out.

To make this post somewhat worthwhile, I wholeheartedly recommend the following sites for all your JHORROR/Japanese Cinema needs:

TWITCH FILMS
SNOWBLOOD APPLE
MIDNIGHT EYE

My favorite horror film is A Tale of Two Sisters (it's Korean). The last horror movie I saw was, technically, Silent Hill, but before that I saw Ichi the Killer which was more obscene guro than actually frightening, but it still qualifies as guro and it was pretty hilarious and cool.

I watched Hostel and BioZombie last Thursday.

anonymous: Yeah, A Tale of Two Sisters was very moody and nice-- Evan, my gf and I saw it on the big screen in SF last year. Did you like Silent Hill? Evan and I saw it last Sunday and I thought it was sortof dull and torture-ific, though some of the effects were pretty sweet.

reid: aghhH! How was Hostel? Everybody keeps telling me different things, but the concensus is= GROSS. Blowtorch to the eyeball? People have been saying it's homophobic, etc... ?

oh yeah, and BioZombie.. was it worth checking out? I saw Stacy last month and hated it, but i've heard some good things about that one:

"Salo" is pretty disturbing.

breynolds: SALO! "the most disturbing film ever made!" i've actually never seen this one... but i have heard rumors about it-- de sade during wwii madness? The excrement platter scene particularly seemed to inspire two of our favorites: mr. Maruo and aaron k!
will check this one out ASAP! thanks for recommendation. -ryan

Yo, yo! Long time no hear.

Anyways, last good horror film I saw was "Marebito" by Takashi Shimizu (Ju-On). Stars none other than Shinya Tsukamoto in a disturbing lead as an obsessive cameraman out to discover the true meaning of fear (which involves keeping a vampiric girl as a pet). Pretty excellent film, and very much beyond the recent J-Horror formula.

Recently I've seen Audition which I liked. Silent Hill which I didn't like (huge fan of the games; very disappointed in the movie). Slither which was pretty fun to watch.

The last horror film i saw was Hostal. I LOVED IT! the entire theater my boyfriend and i went to were laughing during the whole movie. It was such a "B" movie, but well worth the comidic aspect.

ben: doood, nice to hear from you again! I've been hearing some awesome things about marebito... Oh, nate got me the Midnight Eye book on Tsukamoto for x-mas and i've really been loving it. he's so fucking great!

anonymous1: SLITHER! my gf and i were really going to see it but backed out at the last second since it wasn't nearby. homeboy from firefly + exploding slugbeasts sounds pretty funny.

amanda: dude, i keep hearing things and things, but i just don't think i wanna suffer through hostel-- as much as BROS getting tortured may strike some sick chords, the misogyny (?) and the blowtorch to the eye thingy just isn't for me right now. I haven't been in the mood for NEW SPLATTER since.. well, High Tension, really and the torture thing is getting into the wrong director's hands. . . but well, i can't only stay away for so long before i wanna DIVE (gross!) back in

thanks everyone for the awesome comments! keep them coming :)

I watched Cronenberg's remake of THE FLY for like the fifth or sixth time last weekend. I never get tired of it, and as far as movies I own, it's the most fun to show to friends. When my friend screamed at the inside-out monkey, then paled as I promised, "Oh, it gets much, much worse," I knew we were in for a good time.

oh yea, John Carpenter's "The Thing" is one i can watch a lot.
neat creatures.

Hostel! The only movie I've ever seen that made someone in the theatre vomit.

You should really check out SLiTHER. It was entertaining. And it was pretty gross, but in a good way. A lot of slime and gooeyness.

It's pretty much the only horror movie recently that critics seem to love.

THING FLY HOSTEL SLITHER!

nice assemblage there! Fly & Thing are both awesome and quintessential... I love that X-Files season 1 episode that rips off THING, and FLY is distilled down body horror at its finest.

man, SLITHER... I was on the fence, but you guys/gals have changed my mind.. i'm DEFINITELY gonna check this out when it hits DVD.

wheeee

Fly is good. Best Cronenberg is Videodrome though. I recall some of his earlier ones having pretty weird premises. Rabid is a pornstar gets in a bike accident, gets skin graft which causes her to grow a vampiric penis in her armpit [don't think you can tell that's what it's supposed to be, read an interview with Cronenberg once where he said that]. chaos and martial law ensues when her victims begin turning up "rabid" and contagious. I recall The Brood and They Came From Within also being good.

Last good one I saw was Blair Witch, which was quite some time ago. One I'd very much like to see again - for I remember it fondly - Delamorte Dellamore. Supernatural zombie romance..

Tsukamoto is good [tokyo fist is my fave] but stay away from hiruko the goblin: it's a dud.

The last good horror movie I saw was Scare 2 Die (Pang Bros HK).

However, beyond the obvious (Ringu, etc) I would recommend these:
Thai--
13 Beloved (GREAT)
Shutter
SARS Wars (Oh it sounds bad, but I really thought it was fun!)
Japanese--
Unholy Women
Hair Extensions (once again, much better than the title suggests)
Hellevator (another bad title)
HK--
Mad Detective
Diary
Scare 2 Die
Korean--
The Quiet Family
Ghost House
Into the Mirror

Those are my pics :)
