As has now become a tradition for me, I brought my Disneyland Autograph Book along with me to the Toronto Comic Arts Festival (TCAF) this past weekend. The book has become my place for collecting autographs and sketches from cartoonists and friends... Previous posts included sketches from MoCCA 2008, along with the batch from SDCC 2008.
I am still uploading photos and working on additional posts for tomorrow, including a round-up of the entire TCAF experience, meeting Yoshihiro Tatsumi, and visiting The Beguiling comic shop. Here is one post from the weekend to start things out!

If you missed it, I posted some exciting news last week: Shintaro Kago will be appearing in the next issue of the German comics anthology, ORANG. This will be his first European publication (outside of his guest strips in Vice Magazine) Update: "The first European publication was an Italian monograph published by D/visual in december 2006", says Anonymous in the comments.
I've received an update from Christian at Reprodukt, who has passed along the first page of the comic for us to preview! For ORANG 8, Shintaro Kago has contributed a brand-new 4-page wordless comic called "Rubik's Cube".

ORANG is edited/curated by Sascha Hommer, and issue 8 debuts this July. As usual, it looks to feature a number of unique and radical contemporary cartoonists from all over. I'll post details on ordering the book when it comes out this summer!

Another short update. Since I won't be making it to Comic-Con or MoCCA this year, I decided to take a few days off and splurge on a trip to Toronto to attend the Toronto Comic Arts Festival (TCAF).
TCAF is a con like SPX or APE, spanning all-day Saturday and Sunday. It presents a new (and Canadian) opportunity to check out minicomics/zines, hang out with friends/Electric Ant contributors, and attend a few manga panels.
But... the main, MAIN reason I came was to have a chance to meet Yoshihiro Tatsumi! In celebration of A DRIFTING LIFE, Drawn & Quarterly flew Tatsumi out for events in New York and then for TCAF. Friday night, D&Q and The Beguiling are hosting an in-conversation event with Adrian Tomine and Tatsumi... I can't freakin' wait. Evan got to meet Tatsumi at SDCC back in 2006, but this will be my big chance!
I'm staying at a hotel nearby the Toronto Library, and flying home on Sunday night. Reports and pictures to follow once I get back!
Just an FYI for folks, I've started up a newly-open twitter account, where I'll be talking about Same Hat, Electric Ant Zine, and other book/comics projects. It's here: @remoteryan.
I had been using Twitter off and on since last March, but with the whole thing on private and just to keep in touch with friends. That worked fine, but I couldn't ever direct message or @whatever people if they weren't following me. Minor Bummer. My new twitter fu has already paid off, as Michael Kupperman and I had a brief back-&-forth yesterday... made my day!

I got a nice surprise this morning to see some news I'd heard a while back publicly confirmed on Sascha Hommer's blog: Shintaro Kago will be appearing in the next issue of the fantastic comics anthology, ORANG!
ORANG is put by one of my fave publishers, Reprodukt from Germany. Reprodukt is basically like if you took the most interesting German cartoonists and rolled them together with the best books from D&Q, Fantagraphics, NBM, and Last Gasp. ORANG is an annual (approximately?) book edited by cartoonist (and super talented dude) Sascha Hommer. I've posted previously about Hommer's excellent graphic novel, Insekt.
I just received a copy of ORANG 7 in the mail, and thoroughly enjoyed it... It's like a younger and more European version of MOME, but also features indie comics from China as well. The books are thick and have really nice paper & production values.

No specific details yet on what Shintaro Kago comic will be in the issue, but I understand it's an original comic just for the anthology :) If previous issues of ORANG are any indication, the title will likely be in the original Japanese, with German and English translations as footnotes on the bottom of each page.
