THE BEST WAY TO SPEND A LONELY NIGHT...

...is at home, reading an advance copy of a new volume of one of the greatest manga series of all time. OH YES.

Highlight so far:

  • A contagious disease in Africa causes patients to physically shrink in size before dying.

  • Black Jack slices open his own intestines to remove a parasite, while fighting off dingos in the outback!

  • Robins nicking coins to pay the good doctor to save a little boy;

  • Black Jack in a race against time with Dr. Kiriko, Japan's own Doctor Kevorkian stand-in.

  • A House-esque short story, where BJ schools some rowdy residents attempting their first surgery.

  • A ludicrious story about a young boy Black Jack helps a nurse save, who grows up to be internationally important.

  • Coin locker babies, an ironic bank robbery tale, and more!

Thank you, Vertical! Black Jack Vol. 3 will be released on January 20, 2009. Click here for a free online preview.

@alex: thanks 4 the comment. i think vol3 is more on par with volume 2-- neither are quite as awesome as the group of stories in the first book -- but it's still rad. I mean, this is Black Jack we're talking about.

I was at kinokuniya last week and saw the entire series of BJ on the shelf... and was reminded that the entire series runs like 180+ chapters. It is awesome to know we have another 15 or so books ahead of us!

i'm so glad that these books are given a second life here, I loved Umezz's "drifting classroom" and "Cat eyed boy." I don't know what drew me to them, but i think it's just the sheer effort, great retro art and funky storytelling that give the books their off-kilter appeal.
